Many older adults have to live with chronic pain. In fact, the number is so huge that it is recently estimated that around 50 million adults have to cope with chronic pain. To make things worse, chronic pain tends to have side effects like having trouble sleeping, stress, or even depression.
One way that you can attempt to relieve this pain is by trying out some pain relieving stretches for older adults to aid in flexibility and pain relief. Take note that before trying any of the recommendations we have listed below, it is important to first consult your doctor if they are suitable for you and your fitness level. This is especially so if you have had past injuries, a medical condition, or any type of balance issues.
Overhead Side Stretch
This exercise can be done either standing, sitting on a chair, or sitting with your feet around hip-width apart. To begin, get into a comfortable position before raising your arms and locking your fingers together. Make sure to keep your chest straight and then gently start to learn to your right. Hold this position for around 10 to 30 seconds before moving back to the center and repeating on your left side. This stretch is designed to help that lie between and support the ribs.
Hamstring Stretch
Preferably done while standing up, place your left heel with your toes up in front of your straight back leg. Without curling your lower back, hinge forward until you start to feel a stretch before holding the position for 10 to 30 seconds. Repeat with your other leg. This stretch can help with preventing any form of lower back pain and help to improve your posture and flexibility.
Shoulders Stretch
This can be done standing up or sitting down on a chair if you have balance issues. Begin by reaching your left arm across your body and putting your right hand on your upper left arm. Using your right hand, draw your left arm closer. Hold this position for 10 to 30 seconds before switching your arms. This exercise is particularly helpful if you want to relieve tension and tightness in your shoulders and neck.
